Landing > In the Field
The Landing Project invites you to join us on a series of walks on and around farms in Shropshire and the borderlands of Wales. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about farming activities on site and for us to extend both the conversation and exploration we are making as part of the Landing Project with a growing community.
These inclusive events are open to anyone with an interest in farming and the rural landscape. Each event will take place at a different site with walking and some creative activities devised and led by one or more participants. We will invite host farmers, guest artists/writers, environmental specialists or other practitioners to lead or contribute to the discussions and activities.
If you have ideas for an event or if you would like to lead an event, please get in touch with us via the email address below.
To book a free place on an event email landingartproject@gmail.com
We research each walk aiming for safe routes and access. However, we must ask that you take responsibility for your own safety when joining these outdoor events.
This page will be updated below to include documentation of the events plus resources and links to further information where appropriate. We would love to see creative responses, mappings or other feedback from anyone who takes part.
Next Event:
Landing>3: Lake Vyrnwy
Friday 11th April 2025
This walk will be accompanied by RSPB Warden Alex Falkenham and will be an opportunity to walk through different ecosystems around the lake including forestry, meadow and farmland. There will be an opportunity to learn about the peat rewetting that is happening on high ground near the lake and Andrew Howe and Molly Brown will provide some creative prompts to connect us to our surroundings.
Start 10.30 am, aiming to finish by around 2.30pm.
Approximately 5 miles across uneven, muddy terrain.
We will meet at the 'Giants of Vyrnwy' trailhead carpark on the north shore of the lake. From Abertridwr take the road past the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa (map below). There will be cars departing from Shrewsbury/ Oswestry area so please get in touch if you’d like a lift or you might be able to give lifts.
Bring your own refreshments/lunch and water as there are no facilities to pick up refreshments once we have started the walk.

Landing>1: Berllan Deg
Friday 13th December 2024
We started and finished this 5 mile walk at Berllan Deg farm, Rhoswiel, Weston Rhyn, the home of Molly Brown and Oliver Kynaston (festive refreshments at the farmhouse post walk). We visited the agro-forestry site at Templefields near Bronygarth, following a circular route across the border into Wales and on to Chirk across the spectacular Chirk Aqueduct.
We made a collaborative winter wreath with foraged plants and other materials and carried along the way by Molly Brown
Landing>2: Shrewsbury
Friday 7th February 2025
On a bitingly cold morning in February, we found warmth in kinship, following the path alongside the River Severn to Poplar Island and on to Doctor's Field. Both countryside sites are flood plain pasture with a mix of meadow and woodland with rich natural biodiversity and history. The walk continued on to Coton Hill where we explored the rolling glaciated landscape of wetlands, community orchard, pasture and allotments.
This walk was guided by Andrew Howe who prompted some creative activities in writing and making small concertina books, focusing on the diverse tree species along our route. Photos include some of the created work.
And here is a contribution from Kate Allan:
Like Alders
Ready to go I began with the wood,
wary of the emerging thing but letting it take
its own journey
How peeled back they are, these hefty creatures!
Keeping each other afloat even as
they go their own way, knowing
If you compete you split and bleed red, like alders.
